Smells Like Teen Spirit
Not too long ago were the days of the feminine sundress, combat boots, Courtney and Kurt and last but not least, flannel shirts. The grunge music that came out of Seattle was all over the place and I loved it – the gritty distorted electric guitars, the angst-filled lyrics.
The hair was definitely a reflection of the times. It was the “I really don’t care” kind of aesthetic. Today on the fall 2011 runways we saw fresh adaptations of grunge from designers like Rag and Bone, Thakoon, and Araks.
Our Future is Golden
Metallics have become the new neutral. They have become classics within fashion, home décor, and now adored in the hair. On the runways of Betsey Johnson and Jason Wu we saw metallic gold color painted and sprayed in the hair. I love the application on the models at Jason Wu, so fresh. Go for the gold!
Sleek It Out
This fall the pony is more refined than the summer pony. Whether or not it’s displayed with a deep side part or slicked straight back, it’s a dramatic, sophisticated look. This look can be a great second day hairstyle. Run some Session Whip Volume Foam by Unite on dry hair from scalp to ends. Use a brush (I love the Mason Pearson Brush) to distribute through the hair and slick it back. For an extra glossy finish, apply Unite’s Shina-Mist Weightless Shine Spray.
“Leave Some Length On Top”
Love a man to look effortlessly cool! Fall 2011 runway looks show men’s hair with some length and as well as contrast. These looks below stand out this season – men’s hair has come a long way! Gone are the days that men are boxed in to a couple looks, they have come out to play.
One look that stands out is the retro dapper hairstyle has become popular thanks to AMC’s Mad Men. This look can be styled with some product and directionally blow dried if necessary to get out any wave in the hair.
If he is not feeling too proper, this style can become a bit gritty and disheveled by directing it forward, letting the natural texture come out and using just the hands to style. Product is your friend!
Here is a great example of how a similar outfit can look hot with four very different hairstyles. You can just feel the personality exuding!
